pop up

A pop up is a form of advertising that opens in a new web browser [?] window. Sometimes pop ups provide useful information without interrupting use of the main site; more often they are regarded as a nuisance. Most web browsers now include a pop up blocker, preventing pop ups from appearing.

A variation of the pop up is the pop under, which appears behind the main window and may not be visible until the main window is closed.
